Foot Health for the New Year

They’re coming in daily since the New Year begun… “Gosh, I can’t put mih foot down nuh, you talk about pain!” Another, “I finish ‘putting away’ 4 o’clock Christmas morning so you could imagine what I’m going thru, since the family celebrate for so! We had relatives from abroad, so I really had no choice.” A male diabetic client is willing to do anything we can for him, since his feet are terribly swollen and very painful; he could hardly walk. Of course he did some imbibing, limed with his friends, and ate up a storm. Though he’s in so much discomfort, he happily confessed his indiscretions as only a Trini would. Persons with ingrown toenails have also been popular visitors.

So a new year is here, and we’re busy making resolutions, but have we thought about our feet, to include changes and or improve on certain habits that would benefit them as well? General health care tend to be among the important areas, but let’s not forget the weight loss, smoking, drinking, and such ills. So while the shopping is over, along with the Christmas parties and holiday food, the weight gain, back, and foot pains are certainly on!
Did most of you know it was coming? Of course! What else could be expected after wearing those killer heels that I warned you not to at that Christmas staff dinner, and the Ole Year’s Night Party? Oh…and the yummy ham, pastelle, turkey, black cake and punch-a-crème that were just too tasty to resist! So let’s turn our focus on some of the important considerations that have implications for your feet.
Foot Health Resolutions
1) Lose the Weight – A common trend in this country is to feast for Christmas and starve in preparation for Carnival. With more and more fast food chains opening up and people’s busy schedules, eating out has become the order of the day. This has resulted in a rise in the obesity rate. The extra weight is often felt and is indeed being placed on our poor feet. It causes stress to your ligaments and arches, and consequently pains, burning, tingling, swelling and even numbness. If you lose the weight you would definitely feel the difference.
2) Stop Drinking – The next ill, is alcohol, which is over subscribed. Many people know they have an alcohol problem and set dates for them to cut back, or quit cold turkey, starting in the New Year. Cutting out the booze will help prevent you from developing peripheral neuropathy of your toes, and also decrease your chances of developing clots in your legs.
3) Quit Smoking – It is known by most that smoking contributes to poor circulation. Quitting ensures that proper blood flow is restored. Besides the feet, smoking affects the lungs, arteries, other organs and the teeth.
4) Buy Appropriate Shoes – Too tight shoes are horrible. Make sure your shoes fit properly. Look for brands that offer reasonable styles and widths, as well as proper comfort technologies. When standing, your shoe should be a thumb’s width longer than your big toe.
5) Manage your Diabetes – A plea to diabetics – ensure your diabetes is kept under control. Monitor your diet, blood sugar level, and do some form of exercise suited to your particular needs. Too many of you suffer needlessly because of indiscipline. As we usually draw to our clients’ attention, if when the problems arise you can carry the burden alone, that’s fine. Think about your loved ones, or dependents, and what the consequences can be. Why affect your quality of life negatively when you can enjoy a better standard of living overall.
Resolutions are easier made than kept. So try to be realistic in your approach. Place health first, since it’s the one thing that allows us to fully enjoy life. Therefore, implement your resolution in stages. It is said that “journey of a thousand miles began with a single step.” Remember this when you’re tempted to falter. Have a purposeful-filled and successful 2011!

Your feet mirror your general health . . . cherish them!
