Maintenance for Children

It’s holiday time for the kids and it’s a good time to focus on the things that you can do to ensure the health and well being of your precious son, daughter, niece, nephew, grand or god-child. For some it may be a treat for successfully passing a national exam or excelling at an end of term/promotion exam. Whichever way, you need to focus on them this holiday, to improve their quality of and on look on life.

In the same way you speak to children about life and pull out the do’s and don’ts list, do you inform them that it is essential to focus on their body? Particular focus should be placed on the hair, face, hands, feet and the body in general. Kids for the most part mirror what they see, and it’s important that they are oriented towards caring for themselves.

While feet were designed for movement, kids do excessive walking, standing and running. It’s important therefore to assess a child’s activity level to determine whether or not they’re a candidate for extra care. Some parents decide to extend extra care and nothing is wrong with such; it simply leads to starting off the kids on the right track and in some instances providing motivation.

Is your child 7-9, a tween (the age group just before the teen 10-12), or a teenager? Children in these categories would qualify to do services. These services include pedicures, manicures, facials and massages.

Kids can do these services for relaxation or therapeutic reasons. They have many activities like school, church, lessons, and extra-curricular activities like football, cricket, basketball, swimming, dancing, karate, gymnastics and music classes.

Pedicures and Manicures

These entail the same process of a pedicure and manicure for an adult. Clipping, shaping and buffing of the nails; cleaning the cuticles; filing and scrubbing of the feet; and the massage and polish (where permitted).

While it isn’t as often as with adults, children do develop corns, calluses and fish eyes. With the corns, kids wearing too tight sneakers are prone to develop such due to the friction caused. Calluses occur as a result of flat footedness or walking/running around barefooted, and fish eyes (which can be very painful) can be contracted also from being barefooted. These two services are usually done to maintain the hands and feet.

Facials

It’s essential for tweens and teens to learn the “do’s and don’ts” about proper skin care before it’s too late! Give your child the heads-up about taking care of this situation.

Being a tween or a teen is hard enough, but when teens and tweens have to deal with acne, growing up can only be that much harder for them. Most young people in this age group are struggling with identity issues, and self-image. Having acne can play havoc with a child’s self-esteem, and make it difficult for them to feel accepted and valued as a part of their peer group. Help young people deal with acne by giving them acne treatments that may help improve the condition. Remind kids that not everything works for everyone, so if one thing doesn’t work, they can still try something else.

Acne is a very common problem in children, especially adolescents. Since acne isn’t usually considered to be a serious medical problem, it is often ignored and undertreated. However, acne is actually quite a serious problem and is very bothersome and stressful for most teens.
Acne usually starts as your child begins to go through puberty, when hormones cause his skin to become oily. This may lead to oil and bacteria clogging the pores of his skin, giving rise to the characteristic whiteheads and blackheads associated with the condition.

Preventing Pimples

• Wash, (but don’t scrub) the skin, twice daily with a mild cleanser. Avoid harsh cleansers or scrubs, as they can irritate the skin, and lead to more pimples.

• Don’t pop or pinch pimples, as this can lead to scarring/dark marks.

• Use non-comedogenic (non-pore blocking) cosmetics and moisturizers, and don’t put oily or greasy substances on the face or hair.

• Avoid frequent touching the face, as the hands have oil and other bacteria on them which could make the acne worse.

• Avoid wearing hats/headbands or cutting bangs where hair rest on your forehead, since these can also worsen acne.

Contrary to popular belief, pimples are not caused by the foods that we eat (such as chocolate, cheese, soft drinks or greasy foods) or by dirt, and you can’t catch it from someone else. It can be made worse by pinching pimples, harsh scrubbing, over washing, cosmetics which block oil ducts, and emotional stress.

The basic treatments for acne include using an over-the-counter medication with benzoyl peroxide, which kills bacteria, unclog pores and heal pimples. There are many different brands and forms of benzoyl peroxide, including creams and gels. In general, the precise strength of benzoyl peroxide should be recommended by the dermatologist or aesthetician for your child’s face. If your child’s skin is not improving in 4-8 weeks, or he/she has moderate or severe acne, then you should see your dermatologist to discuss treatment with prescription medications.

Massages

Massage is a wonderful stress-buster for children. When we think about stress, we think it’s an adult condition. Only adults have stress…wrong! A young child starting school who is unfamiliar with the area or children in the class will experience stress. Family illness or financial problems, divorce and even vacations can produce emotional strain. Extra-curricular activities, lessons and preparation for exams are also stressful.

Besides stress, massages are excellent for the general well-being of your body and also for children involved in high impact activities; massages are key in dealing with pains and injuries from the sport/activity. Another set of areas not often focused on is that kids get falls all the time and it sometimes causes severe pains; they sit for long periods in class and a combination of the furniture and posture is sometimes poor for the back. Finally, carrying heavy bags to school put further pressure on the feet and spine. So help them to have a healthy vacation by ensuring all is well, especially if they’ve been complaining.
